Apathy
The news doesn’t interest me anymore
Apathy
All I get from current events is a bore
I don’t know
I don’t wanna know
I don’t know, I don’t wanna know, and I don’t care
Apathy
You think it moves me either way
Apathy
What the hell, just another day
I don’t know
I don’t wanna know
I don’t know, I don’t wanna know, and I don’t care
Crises and scandals and earthquakes out west
Right wings and left wings, political mess
Espionage and high financial scam
Wars and inflation and high college fees
Herpes and AIDS and industrial disease
All I can say is WHO GIVES A DAMN?!?
I sit and start at the wall
Don’t care if I don’t get her call
No loving, no hating, no anger, no feeling at all
Apathy
I’m neither calm nor tense
Apathy
TV and radio dull the sense
I don’t know
I don’t wanna know
I don’t know, I don’t wanna know, and I don’t care

I wrote this while in the thick of my army service, in 1986 or so. Israel is a country that lives, eats, and breathes news and current events, and at times it can be asphyxiating. Wouldn't it be so much better, I would ask myself when it got to be too much, if I just blew everything off and said I don't care. But there is no way I could not care, and even today, there is no way I cannot care—especially in crazy times when keeping abreast of current events can mean the difference between health and injury, or life and death. All the same, though, one should carefully choose the issues that matter most and pick the battles to fight, because it can become overwhelming. Musically, I used Lou Reed's "Endlessly Jealous" as a template, although this isn't a facsimile thereof. Never recorded or performed.
