Lyric of the Week: FALLING BETWEEN THE SEATS

Writer's picture: Heshy RHeshy R

You know your act is failing

When you tumble into your audience

Nobody catches you

And you fall flat on your face

Yes, you’re falling

Falling between the seats

You’re having trouble

Too much trouble keeping the beat

You know you’ve bombed for sure

When you hear the crowd shouting

WE WANT HUEY LEWIS!

And he ain’t even scheduled to appear

Yes, you’re falling

Falling between the seats

Maybe it’s a good time to consider

Going back to busking in the streets

Well the record isn’t selling

The manager walked out

And people come to your shows

Just to call you names

Yes, you’re falling

Falling between the seats

You’re better off playing your Casio

Down at the mall, a hatful of coins at your feet

You're better off playing your Casio down at the mall.

"Falling between the seats" is a literal translation of the modern Hebrew expression for an entertainer's act bombing on an epic scale. It's the theme of this blues song about a washed-up has-been rock star, or better yet, a never-been rock-star wannabe. I wrote it during the winter of 1985-86, during the first year of my army service in Israel, while stationed up near the Lebanese border during a period of relative stalemate and ensuing boredom.
