Lyric of the Week: GET US HIGH TONIGHT

Here we are again in the same cruel surrounding

Trying hard to keep ourselves from drowning

Listening for a signal but the silence is resounding

And the boredom level continues to climb

The young girls are playing games, just hangin’ round town every night

And I wouldn’t mind some older lady with experience to hold me tight

But whoever I wind up with, it won’t feel right

Damn, this thing happens to me all the time

The Blues Brothers, the Boss, and the Little Pub will get us high tonight

Walk away from the sun, hide your face from the light

We want to live like kings, to fly away on eagles’ wings

To sing our song, and do our thing

Get us high tonight

So many people, man, they got the blues

It’s so hard to dig their secrets when you’re not in their shoes

But if you want the real reason, just watch the news

They’re hurting bad, but they won’t show it

There are killers out there all the time, but you don’t know who they are

Either madmen with guns or knives or just madmen driving cars

You never know if you’ll be murdered in your own backyard

The fear never leaves you once you know it

But good music, good beer, and good times will get us high tonight

We’re gonna blow off steam and kick ass just for spite

Tell the world to get lost and pay whatever cost

To do our thing and be our own boss

Get us high tonight

Working all day like mindless bees in a hive

We’re alive but we’re six feet under, waiting for resurrection to arrive

Just talking to ourselves so we can keep on walking, thank G-d we’re still alive

When’ll we be through with it

Stuck in a mad rat race, clutching at anything

Thinking we could swing easy deals, but all the deals had strings

We wanted to play our music, but we were doing things

That had nothing to do with it

Well Animal House, the Midnight Special, and the Pink Caddy will get us high tonight

For just a moment in time, everything’ll be all right

So Captain Jack, we’d give the shirts off our backs

To be our own boss and pile our money in stacks

Get us high tonight

Too smart for us to think about, too dumb for us to say

We keep watching our dreams disappear as the buses pull away

The big fantasy is driving around in a big car, taking out all the girls we want, and being able to pay

( . . . tell us it isn’t)

Well, from the rock’n’roll streets of New York and London to the reggae slums of Kingston

they’ll hear of us one day

Our life is in the garbage and everything is going wrong

We’re stuck in the dump while everything around us moves along

Like spiders we try to get somewhere, but habits are too strong

And we fall, fall, fall, fall

We should’ve been a step ahead, but our egos were swollen

We decided to lock the barn after all the good horses were stolen

The only thing that keeps us going is a future that’s golden

And when it’s proffered, we’re gonna take it all

The Stone Pony, Convention Hall, and the Garden will get us high tonight

It’s the Jam Of The Century with our names up in lights

We wanna zag the zig, play the gig

Pile our Uncle Bens in stacks and make it big

Get us high tonight

Get us high tonight

The greatest night (that didn't happen) in our lives.
The greatest night (that didn't happen) in our lives.

This one was written by my longtime musical partner Izzy Kieffer and myself in the spring or early summer of 1986, when I was about halfway through my IDF service and Izzy was just about ready to finish his. We were both a little "home"-sick for the USA and all the things we dreamed we'd have once we'd get back there to pursue our rock'n'roll dream. Unfortunately it didn't quite work out that way but we did have our moments along the journey. Musically, the song owes much to Billy Joel's "Captain Jack" with a little bit of Southside Johnny's "Trapped Again" thrown in. We jammed on it a few times on piano and hand percussion, but never moved beyond that.
