Lyric of the Week: I CANNOT DO THIS ANYMORE

I cannot do this anymore

every day feeling more oppressed

can’t handle the additional weight or stress

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

sitting in the same windowless box

with the mental equivalent of breaking rocks

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

slaving away every day for the man

with just a pittance to show for the work of my hands

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

my body reacts to the strain on my mind

my bones, muscles, and heart respond in kind

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

don’t try to make me find the bright side

I took all the drawbacks and put them aside

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

this is not the challenge I sought

I cast my nets wide but now in them I’m caught

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

the time for good humor has come and gone

I have to figure out some way to move on

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore

I cannot do this anymore!

I cannot do this anymore.

Ever get the feeling, when you're at work, that you are at the bottom of an aquarium tank and you are about to drown? This song is about that feeling. I wrote it when working at an editorial job for a publishing production services company ion Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, in the early 2000s. The only saving grace of that job was that it was close to the harbor, where I could go during my lunch hour, clear my head, and write my songs. I have since moved on to a job with better pay and working conditions (including office windows!) but there are days when the workload is so great that it conjures up the same drowning feeling that induced me to write this song. Never recorded or performed.
