Lyric of the Week: NO NEW SONG
Everything’s so slow and sluggish
I can’t pull my scattered thoughts out of the air
What starts as a good idea comes out as rubbish
The words don’t seem to go anywhere
I need to get centered and focused
That’s what these pages are for
No mystical magic, no hocus pocus
Seems simple but it feels like I’m fighting a war.
Oh, I wish it didn’t have to be this way
I know I’ve got so much that I want to say
I try to will it but the pen won’t obey
Looks like there’ll be no new song today.
Just put the pen to the paper and it’ll start going
But right now it seems like it’s going nowhere
Normally by now the words would be flowing
But all I can do right now is sit and stare
A vertical red rule and 33 green lines
And all the empty space in between
It lies there before me, as blank as my mind
It feels like my memory has been wiped clean.
Oh, I wish …
I know this will end, it’s only temporary
It isn’t a relapse of the old writer’s block
But the thought of slipping back is quite scary
Especially with the image bank overstocked
So I sit here ruminating and mulling
About regressing back to a bygone age
But what do you know, I took something from nothing
And somehow filled an entire page.
Oh, I wish …

This is a song that dates back to the mid-2000s, once I had finally begun work in a field that suited my talents properly ... but the price of such stability was the loss of the roll I was on in terms of songwriting prolificity. I was frustrated at why I wasn't able to write as profusely as I had only mere weeks before, and ironically, I wrote a song about it. That's the way it just goes sometimes.
