"Who is that girl?" is the line memorably spoken by Elwood Blues as he and his brother Jake shielded themselves from the Mystery Girl's .223 salvos in the sewer tunnel under the Palace Hotel Ballroom as they tried making their escape from the cops in The Blues Brothers.
It's also the line spoken by me every time I'd cross paths with a particular girl as we'd make the rounds in downtown Jerusalem on a typical Thursday or Saturday night in the late 1980s, when all the English-speaking students would hit town at the end of the week. We never gave each other more than a passing glance, so I didn't have to worry about her suddenly producing an M-16 and demanding an answer as to why I stood her up under the canopy. I always wondered who she was, though.
This song also has the distinction of being one of the last songs I wrote as a single man. Shortly afterward I got engaged, and all bets were off. Musically, the song has a sort of James Brown, "Mother Popcorn"-ish groove, by way of the Blues Brothers on their album Made in America. I never got to rehearse it, let alone perform or record it.
I never did find out who she was.
