Free, free
As free as the wind
That’s the way I want to be
Free, free
As free as the wind
That’s the way it’ll always be
Wind whipping through my hair, feeling real psyched
Kicking up a cloud of dust on my motorbike
Riding like a wild spirit, look at me go
Speeding through the desert of New Mexico
Hang gliding over the Rocky Mountains
Fifteen thousand feet up but who’s countin’?
Flying like an eagle to the sea
I’m as free as the wind, as the wind could be
Free, free ...
Riding on my horse across the great plains
Keeping a steady gallop as I hang onto the reins
Riding like cowboy with the world at my feet
Built for speed, moving fast and fleet
Sailing through the wide blue San Francisco Bay
Kicking a cool mist of ocean spray
Gliding like a water bird so gracefully
I’m as free as the wind, as the wind could be
Free, free ...
I wear my freedom triumphantly
I’m as free as the wind, as the wind could be

I wrote this one in the thick of my army years in Israel, when I would daydream about what it would be like once I finished my service and went back to the USA. I remembered a conversation I had with several friends when we must have been ten or eleven years old, about what kind of car we saw ourselves driving when we'd get older; one friend said he didn't want a car, but he wanted a motorcycle, because he wanted to be "free as the wind," and that became the kernel from which this song grew. Musically, I imagined it having a sort of uptempo, "galloping" kind of rhythm similar to Dire Straits' "Solid Rock." It was one of those songs I wrote to keep myself sane during a time in my life that often felt anything but. Never recorded or performed.
