Daily Lyric: JUST YOU

I stand outside your window singing an expresso love song

‘Cause I know the feeling inside me is so strong

Up till now things went bad, hard as I might try

‘Cause the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry

But I can make up for anything that went wrong

You put yourself on the line for me when you didn’t have to do it

You think I didn’t appreciate it but believe me when I tell you I knew it

I like you a lot and I think I could love you

I got a feeling that you think that too

That’s how I’m feeling when I’m thinking of you

If I’m wrong about you, just tell me so

I may flirt around but that’s just when I’m alone

But now my heart is set on, I want you to know

Just you

You tell me there’s this guy and he means a lot to you

No offense meant honey, but what else is new

Look into the past you’ll se a whole lot of others

‘Cause the past is a gang of departed lovers

Well, I don’t give a damn about all those other dudes

They scream your name as they run through the streets of this town

Even the wind cries out for you as it blows their last hopes down

I can’t meet you halfway ‘cause I’ll be stuck in the middle

But I’ll give you my heart if you want me to

If you love him so much, love me a little

If you don’t want to, then just say no

I won’t be hurt, we’ll just keep the status quo

But now my heart is set on, I want you to know

Just you

Come on and we’ll take a ride down Thunder Road

Through the streets of this broken promised land

I can’t pretend to be a superhero

But I’ll give you whatever I can

I know it sounds a bit insane, crazy, and funny

Coming from a guy like me

But I mean it, honey

Oh, can’t you see

Well, I didn’t come here just to ask you to dance

So you’re scared I’m gonna back you into some kind of dead-end romance

But I know a place where we can go together

and everything will feel all right

Where the music keeps on rolling all day and all night

We’ll get to that place, where everyone has a chance

Well, put on your things and we’ll take a ride down to the seashore

There’s a big beautiful world just on the other side of your front door

I like you a lot and I think I could love you

I got a feeling that you think that too

That’s how I’m feeling when I’m thinking of you

If I’m wrong about you, just tell me so

I may flirt around but that’s just when I’m alone

But now my heart is set on, I want you to know

Just you

Well, put on your things and we’ll take a ride down to the seashore.

This tale harks back to one of my romantic pursuits during the mid-1980s while I was in the midst of my army service. It was a convoluted story that does not need retelling, and it ultimately went nowhere after several attempts. But I did get a few sweet love songs out of the whole adventure. Musically, this was lifted lock, stock, and rock'n'roll from Dire Straits, with some obvious Springsteenisms sprinkled throughout. I suppose I was wearing my influences on my sleeve to impress the girl I wrote it for. But along with the romance, the song ultimately went nowhere, although I rehearsed it with a local guitarist and recorded it to cassette, which may still exist among my archives.
