Lyric of the Week: PUNK ROCK

They were five high school boys from the Island

They wanted to play that rock’n’roll

So they took that two-chord sound

With heavy metal stripped down

And fused it with a little bit of soul

Started getting really popular

Around the Hamptons bars

They had more fans

Than the other local bands

It was the attack of the killer guitars

They thought, Hey, like, we’re original!

We can start a whole new craze!

So with their earrings on

And their makeup on

They entered their fashion phase

Made the rounds in New York City

Made some money now and then

Went to London town

When punk wound down

And they were never heard from again

Just another punk band in England

They disappeared without a trace

You couldn’t tell them apart

From a hundred other upstarts

Just another band without a face

If you wanna know what happened

To the five Long Island boys

They busk around

They can be found

Among the English unemployed

They were five high school boys from the Island

The story of a fictional band that I dreamed up during my army service in the 1980s, based on a bunch of stories I heard about different musicians during the era. More a dig on what seemed like the conformist, de rigueur fashion style that the musicians of that age felt the need to adhere to than anything else. No music, just a lyric ... never rehearsed, recorded, or performed.
