Well, I never got the nerve up to ask you
And it looks like you got that trouble yourself
You make my heart race like a four forty every time I pass you
Oh yeah, you’re definitely dangerous to my health
You know your smile always kills me
And the sound of your voice always kills me
I mean all you did was say hi and my knees turned into jelly
And this tickling sensation started up in my belly
So what’s gonna be? What am I gonna do?
There’s no way to avoid this running into you
We constantly look for a thousand and one ways
To ignore each other
There’s got to be an end
We’ve got to stop meeting like this
What will the neighbors think
We’ve got to stop meeting like this
‘Cause you got me on the brink
Of disaster
The two of us go round in circles like some crazy dance
If this goes on my head is gonna burst
We oughta join forces in search of romance
Or at least whatever comes first
Well, I’m having a hard time trying to make this work
‘Cause I’m scared of coming off like some kind of jerk
I try to act nonchalant but I know you see right through it
But I don’t have the guts to get down to it
And you’re curious and you wanna find out
You really wanna know what I’m all about
Hey babe I know you wanna know
It don’t make sense to pretend
We’ve got to stop meeting like this ...
No no no no no no no! This ... cannot continue!
These staring contests drive me up a creek
And I can see the nerves tensing up in you
Like an a-bomb every time we play this hide and seek
I’ve had enough of this, you better be alert tonight
For that one phone call that’s gonna shatter the ice
There’s got to be more to life than making these rounds
Again and again and again and again
And again and again and again!
We’ve got to stop meeting like this ...

In the winter and early spring of 1986, I was unattached, so to speak, and there were several women who had piqued my interest. One of them I had first laid eyes on the previous Passover at the Laromme Hotel (now the Inbal) in Jerusalem ... her smile lit up the whole lobby and it was impossible for me to ignore. By the time I had finally gotten up the guts to approach her, however, the holiday was over and she and her family had checked out. But that wasn't the end of the story ... she reappeared in town while doing her year-in-Israel, which coincided with my first year in the army. Somehow I had conveyed the nonverbal message that I was into her, and she received it, but until we connected, there were several weeks in which we nonchalantly danced around the other's attention, pretending the other didn't exist but knowing full well that we did. Finally, I took the plunge and called her ... and the rest was, well, not exactly history, but at least the crazy dance was over with.
Musically, I borrowed a bit from Southside Johnny, another bit from Dire Straits, and a little smattering from J. Geils. I banged it out on the piano numerous times like many songs I wrote during that era, but nothing ever became of it ... just like the romance itself.
